SmartWave Mobility: OSS-Based Radio Network Optimization

Traditionally, radio network optimization methods involve a lot of drive-testing and other redundant manual tasks that generate many predictions and guesstimates. These tasks are often performed separately for each vendor equipment and usually require various scattered tools to capture the performance data.
SmartWave Mobility makes life of radio network performance engineers easy by providing one completely integrated and open data management platform analyzing real subscriber data in a multi-vendor network environment. By using SmartWave Mobility, drive-testing is significantly reduced and high quality results are delivered in a fraction of the time and cost when compared to traditional optimization requirements.
Based on the concept of evolving optimization, SmartWave Mobility enables accurate optimization by using MMRs (Mobile Measurement Reports) and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). SmartWave Mobility features four modules for different optimization tasks:

SmartWave Mobility analyzes network data coming from multiple sources (MMR, handover, traffic, drive test logs, configuration and coordinate information,...) and automatically builds a complete network model (interference matrix and KPIs). Based on this modeling, powerful algorithms are used to calculate and propose various optimization plans and analyses that are bound by fully configurable parameters to fit various carrier types and design constraints.
These well-structured processes coupled with proprietary mechanisms ultimately lead to improvements in the most crucial network KPIs – handover success rates, drop call rates, Rx Quality UL/DL, network interference, etc...
Accurate Optimization
Today’s operators must evolve their network to offer advanced data services in a cost-efficient way in order to stay one step ahead of the competition. To achieve this, new technologies such as LTE present new opportunities but their advanced features also create new challenges that need to be overcome through innovative optimization solutions. Nowadays, the most accurate optimization is based on MMR (Mobile Measurement Report) and KPIs.

Mobile Measurements
With most of planning tools, the radio environment (interference matrix, etc) is estimated with a set of predictions and extrapolations that can be made quite accurate only if all models are accurate and correctly tuned (propagation model, map data, antenna model...). This represents a good approach when a network is not yet operational as it can induce some service interruption in a mature commercial environment.
In live environments, the best accuracy is achieved with mobile measurements: the interference data is reported where the subscriber handsets really are. Moreover, these are often difficult environments (heavy urban, indoors, tunnels) handled with accuracy. Standard Mobile Measurement Reports (MMRs) that are normally used for HO decisions are collected and stored by BSCs (SmartWave Mobility supports both DAC/CF measurement and Total FEP measurement on Nokia Siemens Network equipment).
